AES 57th Conference Hollywood

Following stops in Finland and London, the AES (Audio Engineering Society) 57th International Conference is landing in Hollywood! Unlike the annual AES Convention (like the one recently held in Los Angeles), the AES Conferences are held several times a year and focus on research and new developments in a specific area of audio. The Hollywood conference will cover the future of audio in cinema, television and online content.

As audio engineers, we’re excited to attend and learn more about immersive sound (such as Dolby Atmos and Barco Auro), and helping to make dialog more intelligible on TV and in theaters.

One topic of special interest to us at Audionamix is reproducing multi-channel audio using a minimum number of speakers. We have used our sound source separation technology in the past to create upmixes to 5.1 from mono sources, such as our work on Psycho, so we’re eager to hear how this works!

Among the many distinguished guests at the conference will be Avid CEO Louis Hernandez Jr., who will give the keynote speech. Since taking over the position two years ago, Mr. Hernandez has led Avid toward creating technology that enables and encourages collaboration and connection. In a 2013 interview, Hernandez said, “What interested me about Avid is that technology should bring humans closer together, and bring more joy….You stay relevant by making the tools that do things that are strategically important to the users. Yesterday it might have meant laying down 16 tracks and recording it in your studio – tomorrow it could mean doing that in 100 different countries with 1,000 different people.”

Avid’s Pro Tools 12 will introduce many of these collaborative features, including the ability to work on the same session at the same time with other musicians in different locations. In addition, an all-new Marketplace will allow users to share, sell and promote their music, as well as download plug-ins without leaving Pro Tools. ADX VVC, our vocal volume control plug-in, will be one of the first products to be available in the new Pro Tools Marketplace.

It’s moments like these when we feel most a part of this constantly thriving and developing audio community, whether introducing our products on this new marketplace or attending this conference with those we hold in high esteem in our field. We’re looking forward to AES 57 and we hope to see you there!

The AES 57th International Conference will be held at the TCL Chinese Theater, March 6th through 8th, 2015. Please visit the 57th International Conference site for more information.
